Hallloween origiinated as a ccelebration cconnected witth evil spiriits. Witches flying on bbroomsticks wwith ghosts, goblins and skeletons haave all evolvved as symbools of Hallowween. Bats, oowls and otheer nocturnal animals are also popularr symbols off Halloween. They were orriginally feaared because people belieeved that thhese creaturees could commmunicate withh the spiritss of the deadd.
Black catss are also syymbols of Hallloween and hhave religiouus origins ass well. Blacck cats were considered tto be reincarrnated beingss with the abbility to diivine the futture. During the Middle AAges it was bbelieved thatt witches couuld turn theemselves intoo black cats.. Thus when ssuch a cat waas seen, it wwas considerred to be a wwitch in disgguise. All thhese are popuular trick-orr-treat costtumes and deccorations forr greeting caards and winddows.

Pummpkins are allso a symbol of Halloweenn. The pumpkiin is an orannge-colored squash, and orange has bbecome the otther traditioonal Halloweeen color. Carrving pumpkiins into jackk- o-lanternns is a Hallooween custom also dating back to Ireeland. A legeend grew up aabout a man nnamed Jack whho was so stiingy that he was not alllowed into heeaven when hee died, becauuse he was a miser. He coouldnt enterr hell eitheer because hee had played jokes on thee devil. As aa result, Jacck had to waalk on the eaarth with hiss lantern unttil Judgementt Day. So Jacck and his laantern becamme the symboll of a lost oor damned souul. To scare these souls away on Hallloween, the Irish peoplee carved scarry faces out of turnips, beets or pottatoes repreesenting Jacck of the Lanntern, or Jaack-o-lanternn.
