Oscar Wilde was the second son born into an Anglo—Irish family at 21 Westland Row, Dublin. His father William Wilde was a surgeon and was knighted in 1864 for his services to medicine. Its main theme is the death penalty. Wilde was found guilty of homosexual offences in 1895 and was sentenced to two years hard labour in prison, being transferred to Reading, Berkshire in November 1895 Lady Windermere’s Fan was Oscar Wilde’s first produced play, and it was an instant success on the London stage. Chronicling a series of misunderstandings and deceptions in the high society world of Victorian London, critics and audiences alike were charmed by Wilde’s trademark wit and intelligence.
