Also known as O.Henry He was born in 1862 in North Carolina（北卡罗来纳州）, where he spent his childhood. When he was eighteen years old， because of his coughing body, he went to Texas（德克萨斯州）. In 1887 he married Athol Estes （阿索尔·艾斯蒂斯）, they had one daughter and one son. In early 1898 ，he was found guilty of embezzlement （贪污罪），and sentenced to five years in an Ohio prison（被判处到俄亥俄州监狱5年）.
