Introduction:
Thepredictionandpreventionofearthquakeshavealwaysbeenachallengingtaskforseismologists.Thestudyoffaultrupturedynamicsplaysasignificantroleinearthquakeforecastingandmitigation.Althoughalotofresearchhasbeenconductedtounderstandthedynamicsofplanarfaults,non-planarfaultsaremorecommonlyobservedinnatureandpresentagreaterchallengeinunderstandingtheirbehavior.Therefore,itisessentialtostudythedynamicsofnon-planarfaultstomakeaccurateearthquakepredictions.
Objectives:
Theprimaryobjectiveofthisstudyistoinvestigatethedynamicsofthree-dimensionalnon-planarfaultrupture.Thespecificobjectivesare:
1.Toanalyzetheeffectsoffaultgeometry,orientation,andslipontherupturedynamics.
2.Tostudytheslipdistributionandstressdropofnon-planarfaultsystems.
3.Toinvestigatetheeffectsoffault-zoneheterogeneityontherupturedynamics.
4.Tocomparetheresultswithpreviousstudiesonplanarfaultsandidentifythedifferences.
Methodology:
Thestudywillbeconductedusingnumericalsimulationmodelsbasedonthefinite-elementmethod.The3Dfaultgeometrywillbeconstructedbasedonobservationaldata.Thesimulationwillbecarriedoutfordifferentfaultgeometries,sliprates,andorientationstoanalyzetheeffectsoftheseparametersontherupturedynamics.Thestressdistributionsandslipdistributionswillbeanalyzedusingdifferentvisualizationtechniques.Theeffectsofheterogeneityinthefaultzonewillbeinvestigatedbyincorporatingdifferentmaterialswithvaryingmechanicalproperties.
ExpectedOutcomes:
Thestudyisexpectedtoprovideinsightsintothedynamicsofthree-dimensionalnon-planarfaultrupture.Theresultswillhelptoidentifythecriticalparametersthatcontroltherupturedynamicsandtheassociatedseismichazard.Thestudywillalsohe
