thislibrarywasopentoeveryone,allreadershadtopayamembershiporsubscriptionfeeinordertoborrowbooks.Veryfewsubscriptionlibrariesexisttoday. Somebookandstationarystoresmaintainsmallrentallibraries,whereanyonemayborrowbooksforadailycharge.Thefirsttrulyfreepubliclibrarythatcirculatedbooks

toeveryoneatnocostwasstartedatasmallNewEnglandtownin1833.Today,therearemorethan7,000freepubliclibrariesthroughouttheUS.Theycontainabout160millionbookswhichwerecirculatedtoover52millionreaders.
