TsinghuaUniversitywasestablishedin1911,originallyunderthename“TsinghuaXuetang”.Theschoolwas

renamedTsinghuaSchoolin1912.Theuniversitysectionwasfoundedin1925.Thename“NationalTsinghua

University”wasadoptedin1928.

ThefacultygreatlyvaluedtheinteractionbetweenChineseandWesterncultures,thesciencesandhumanities,

theancientandmodern.TsinghuascholarsWangGuowei,LiangQichao,ChenYinqueandZhaoYuanren,

renownedastheFourTutorsintheInstituteofChineseClassics,advocatedthisbeliefandhadaprofoundimpact

onTsinghuaslaterdevelopment.

TsinghuaUniversitywasforcedtomovetoKunmingandjoinwithPekingUniversityandNankaiUniversity

toformtheSouthwestAssociatedUniversityduetotheResistanceWaragainsttheJapaneseInvasionin1937.In

1946TheUniversitywasmovedbacktoitsoriginallocationinBeijingafterthewar.

AfterthefoundingofthePeoplesRepublicofChina,theUniversitywasmoldedintoapolytechnicinstitute

focusingonengineeringinthenationwiderestructuringofuniversitiesandcollegesundertakenin1952.In

November1952,Mr.JiangNanxiangbecamethePresidentoftheUniversity.Hemadesignificantcontributionsin

leadingTsinghuatobecomethenationalcenterfortrainingengineersandscientistswithbothprofessional

proficiencyandpersonalintegrity.

SinceChinaopeneduptotheworldin1978,TsinghuaUniversityhasdevelopedatabreathtakingpaceintoa

comprehensiveresearchuniversity.Atpresent,theuniversityhas14schoolsand56departmentswithfacultiesin

science,engineering,humanities,law,medicine,history,philosophy,economics,management,educationandart.

TheUniversityhasnowover25,900students,including13,100undergraduatesand12,800graduatestudents.As
