It has a high photo-detection efficiency in the d - 420 nm spectral region. This product can represent an elegant candidate for the de- s n sign of a high granularity scintillator based hadron calorimeter for the International i. Linear Collider. In fact, the direct readout of the blue scintillation photons with s a MPPC is a feasible techological solution. The readout of a plastic scintillator by c i a MPPC, both mediated by the traditional wavelength shifting fiber, and directly s y coupled, has been systematically studied. h p [ 1 v 7 8 Introduction 2 1 . 1 The prototype of the highly granular hadronic calorimeter for the International 1 7 Linear Collider (Calice HCAL [1]) consists of finely segmented arrays of scin- 0 tillators. Each tile is read out by a Geiger mode avalanche photodiode[2,3,4] : v (the SiPM) produced by MEPHI (Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute), i X whose specific design matches the required performances needed for its appli- r 2 6 a cation in the calorimeter [5].
