• associated with warm, moist tropical lowlands; equatorial rainbelt; short dry season
sometimes
• most diverse and structurally complex biome
• multi-layered, evergeen canopy provides diversity of niches
• recurrent structural and physiological adaptations to similar environments; these have
arisen in quite different floras
