Introduction:

Vocabularyacquisitionisacrucialpartoflanguagelearning,anditplaysavitalroleinthedevelopmentofsecondlanguageproficiency.However,theacquisitionofvocabularyinEnglishasasecondlanguage(ESL)isacomplexprocess,influencedbyavarietyoffactors,includingdiscoursetypeandreadingtask.ThisstudyaimstoinvestigatetheimpactofdiscoursetypeandreadingtaskonvocabularyacquisitionforEnglishmajors.

Objectives:

Theobjectivesofthestudyare:

1.Toexploretheimpactofdiscoursetype(i.e.,narrative,descriptive,expository,andargumentative)onEnglishmajorsvocabularyacquisition.

2.Toinvestigatetheimpactofreadingtask(i.e.,skimming,scanning,andintensivereading)onEnglishmajorsvocabularyacquisition.

3.ToexploretheinteractionbetweendiscoursetypeandreadingtaskonvocabularyacquisitionamongEnglishmajors.

ResearchQuestions:

Thestudywillanswerthefollowingresearchquestions:

1.DoesdiscoursetypesignificantlyimpactEnglishmajorsvocabularyacquisition?

2.DoesreadingtasksignificantlyimpactEnglishmajorsvocabularyacquisition?

3.DoestheinteractionbetweendiscoursetypeandreadingtasksignificantlyimpactEnglishmajorsvocabularyacquisition?

Methodology:

Thestudywilluseamixed-methodsresearchdesign,includingbothquantitativeandqualitativemethods.Thequantitativedatawillbecollectedthroughapre-test,post-testexperimentaldesign,whereparticipantswillberandomlyassignedtooneofthefourdiscoursetypes(narrative,descriptive,expository,andargumentative)andoneofthethreereadingtasks(skimming,scanning,andintensivereading).Thequalitativedatawillbecollectedthroughsemi-structuredinterviewswiththeparticipantsabouttheirexperiencewiththevocabularyacquisitionprocess.
