Estimates of the quantities of recycled aggregates inScotland M.G. Wintera,*, C. Data are reported for construction and demolition waste, industrial waste and by-products and bituminous planings and breakout; additional categories are reported within these as appropriate. Of an estimated 10,200 kt of arisings, some 5200 kt were landfilled and 5500 kt recycled (the additional 500 kt are accounted for by the consumption of existing stocks of industrial wastes and by-products). Data for recycled quantities are reported in terms of the utility of the application to which the aggregates are put. Targets for the recycling of aggregates in the future are also given. The Scottish Executive (1994) signalled the role and contribution of recycled aggregates in reducing the demand for the production of primary aggregates. By increasing the use of recycled aggregates, the need for new quarries should be reduced, with consequential benefits in terms of retaining the countryside in an unspoiled condition. New quarryproposals often generate strong, local opposition, which could be avoided. Additionally, construction and demolition wastes account for some 50% of controlled waste in Scotland and, consequently, take significant landfill space. Onsite techniques to reuse such wastes can minimise the import of materials. An increase in the recycling and reuse of such wastes could, in due c
