Inordertorestorethisdelicateecosystem,scientistsfromtheU.K.andAustraliaconductedastudythatinvolvedusingloudspeakersunderwaterneardamagedcoralreefstomakethemsoundhealthyandattractfish,potentiallykick-startingthenaturalrecoveryprocessofcoralreefsandtheirdependentlifeforms.ThelocationforthisexperimentwastheGreatBarrierReefintheCoralSea,foundalongsidetheeastcoastofQueensland,Australia.Thesiteisnotedtohavethelargestcoralreefsystemintheworld.

“Healthycoralreefsareremarkablynoisyplaces—thecrackleofsnappingshrimpandthewhoopsandgruntsoffish.Youngfishconcentrateonthesesoundswhentheyrelookingforaplacetosettle，”saidSteveSimpson,studyco-authorandaprofessorattheUniversityofExeter,U.K.

Byusingloudspeakerstocopysuchsounds,partsofdeadcoralreefswerefoundtoattracttwiceasmanyfish,comparedtoplaceswherenosoundswereplayed.“Thesereturningfisharecrucialforcoralreefstofunctionashealthyecosystems.Boostingfishpopulationinthiswaycouldhelptokick-startnaturalrecoveryprocesses,preventingthedamagewereseeingonmanycoralreefsaroundtheworld，”saidleadauthor,TimGordon.
