weekfortheultimateshowdown.Afterthe51championscompetedagainstoneanother,12wentontothefinals.Thenthefieldwasnarrowedtofive.Thefinalfivehadonelastchanceto“perform”apoem.Theoverallchamp,JacksonHille,ahighschoolseniorfromOhio,wona$20,000scholarship.

TheNationalEndowmentfortheArtsandthePoetryFoundationstartedPoetryOutLoudbecausetheyrealizedthathearingapoemperformedisadifferentexperiencefromreadingitonapage.

Itsnotjustamatterofsayingthewordsintherightorder.Itsthetoneofvoice,thepauses,thegestures,andtheattitudeofthepersonperformingthatbringthewordstolife.“Eachtimewehearsomebodyreciteapoem,weunderstandagainwhatwefoundfreshandinterestingaboutit,”saysNationalPublicRadiobroadcasterScottSimon,masterofceremoniesforthefinals.Hearingitinanewvoiceofferssomethingnewtothelistener.
