TheNationalEndowmentfortheArtsandthePoetryFoundationstartedPoetryOutLoudbecausetheyrealizedthathearingapoemperformedisadifferentexperiencefromreadingitonapage.
Itsnotjustamatterofsayingthewordsintherightorder.Itsthetoneofvoice,thepauses,thegestures,andtheattitudeofthepersonperformingthatbringthewordstolife.“Eachtimewehearsomebodyreciteapoem,weunderstandagainwhatwefoundfreshandinterestingaboutit,”saysNationalPublicRadiobroadcasterScottSimon,masterofceremoniesforthefinals.Hearingitinanewvoiceofferssomethingnewtothelistener.
