review Proteomics: the first decade and beyond Scott D. Patterson1,3 Ruedi H. Aebersold2 doi:10.1038/ng1106 s Proteomics is the systematic study of the many and diverse properties of proteins in a parallel manner with the c i t aim of providing detailed descriptions of the structure, function and control of biological systems in health and e n e disease. Advances in methods and technologies have catalyzed an expansion of the scope of biological studies g e r from the reductionist biochemical analysis of single proteins to proteome-wide measurements. Proteomics and u t a other complementary analysis methods are essential components of the emerging ‘systems biology’ approach n / m o that seeks to comprehensively describe biological systems through integration of diverse types of data and, in c . e the future, to ultimately allow computational simulations of complex biological systems. r u t a n . w w w / / : p 1 t Proteomics, like other ‘discovery science’ technologies (Box 1) , Three characteristics of these proteomic technologies are imme- t h such as genomic sequencing, microarray analysis and metabolite diately apparent: first, there is no single technology platform that p profiling, is the direct consequence of both the results obtained can satisfy all of the desired proteomic measurements; second, u o from ambitious projects aimed at mapping and sequencing the the closer the measurement to protein function, the less mature r G complete genome of many species and the changes to our models
