Abstract Sam e as the burialdepth, the burial tmi e also has great effect on the evolu tion of porosity of the clas-
sic rocks during com paction, wh ich is clarified by three aspects in this paper. The first, the author draw s an in-
ference that porosity of stratum is a function of buried depth and buried tmi e. The second, the relationship be-
tw een the porosity ofmudstone and the buried depth, and the relationsh ip bewt een the porosity and buried tmi e
in three representative sedmi entary basins g ives an indication of the effects of depth and burial tmi e on the evolu-
tion of porosity for the classic rocks. The th ird, the results from the smi ulative com paction of sedmi en t in the lab
further prove that the tmi e during compaction influences the degree of the com paction greatly. So the porosity of
