Now, with the deepening of the research on the English teaching in middle school, the teaching of English writing begins to draw the attention of language researchers and teaching researchers. English writing is a practical activity which requires a comprehensive application of English knowledge, and it is also a creative skill. Therefore, experts have begun to think about whether English learners’ writing would be influenced by mother tongue negative transfer. The research results from researchers at home and abroad fully show that this kind of influence exist undeniably. Based on the previous achievements in this field, the present research is focused on the study of the negative transfer of Chinese in high school students’ English writing. This thesis mainly analyzes the errors found in senior high school students’ English writing compositions and summed up the effects of negative transfer of Chinese on students’ English writing. Based on James’ (2001) error classification theory, the effects are mainly manifested in vocabulary and grammar. In the lexical level, the types of errors are word collocation, choice of word and word verbosity; in the grammatical level, the types of errors are mainly reflected in plurality and grammatical accord, tense and voice, word order and conjunction. The aim of this study is to help reduce the negative effect of Chinese transfer in students’ English writing in the teaching of English writing, for example, reinforcing the basic knowledge of English language in the teaching process, especially
