Abstract: Great Expectations is an outstanding novel of Dickens’ later period. It focuses on Pip’s mental development, which can be divided into four stages. During these stages, Pip caters for different “great expectations”, which reflect his change: from innocence to vanity, then his illusion about the capitalist “great expectations” disillusion, finally Pip becomes a mature one without vanity and rash, but with purity and kindness.
