Theory involves four necessary conditions. The author divides these conditions into two main groups – linguistic and extra-linguistic – and argues that the linguistic conditions are logically prior to the extra-linguistic conditions. In the light of modern linguistics, the linguistic condition or the structure is a priori and refers to the paradigmatic relations of linguistic signs. The possibility/impossibility of the transformation of one linguistic paradigm into another shapes the problematic of translatability/untranslatability. A case study of the poem “Jing Ye Si” reinforces the theoretical argument with untranslatability as its focus. Key words: untranslatability; transcendental; necessary condition; paradigmatic relations; syntagmatic relations 1. 理论反思 1.1 先验与经验 面对翻译研究，我们可以提出两类性质不同的问题，从而导致两种不同的方法，最后又将呈现出两种虽可互补但性质迥异的成果。 问题之一：如何在句段层面尽善尽美地完成两种语言之间的话语转换？问题之二：一切翻译如何是可能的或者不可能的？第一个问题关注翻译行为本身(translation performance)。此“行为”与索绪尔的“言语”(laparole)或一般所谓的“言语行为”(speech act)相对应。这是一个经验性(empirical)问题：一旦跨越了经验之界，就是非法的。第二个问题不关心“如何将一段话语翻译得更好”等技术性问题，而是要追问：使一切翻译成为可能/不可能的必要条件是什么？它与经验相关，但不等于经验。其性质是认识论意义上的先验(transcendental)。 第一个问题和涉及的方法，与常识相通，而且实用价值显著。正因为此，这种淡化了认识论维度的翻译研究，如同缺乏科学性的传统语法一样，仍然充当着课堂教学的主角。通过翻译的成果，也可以从翻译行为中抽象出几条乃至几十条训律，当做“理论”来讲授。其合理性，主要体现在它对技能训练的关注。但是，技能训练与理论思考毕竟是两回事。一旦混淆，此进路的弊端就会暴露出来。此弊端可称之为“从经验到超验的飞跃”：一方面，每一次翻译行为，都是一次语用事件，既不可重复又不具备普遍有效性；另一方面，对尽善尽美的追求，又往往驱使经验行为膨胀成对超验的追求(transcendent inquiry)。熟知的案例是所谓“信达雅”三字经。这个念了近百年的经，隐含了一个不合法的哲学认识论假定：我们可以超越自身的经验界线，在语言和语境两个方面同时进入他者的世界。其
