ThewarningwasmadeinthewakeofrecentdebatesinUSCongressoveracurrencybillintendedtopressureChinatorevalueitscurrency,whicharousedgreatconcernsamongthe200businessleadersattendingabusinessforumherehostedbytheChinaInstitute.
TheysaiditwouldbeamisguidedattempttoadministerhardpoweragainstWTOguidelinesofpromotingfreetradeiftheCongresspassedthebillandimposedtariffsonChinesegoods.Intheiropinion,tradewarwasdefinitelyshortsighted.
TheexpertsunderscoredtheimportanceofeducatingtheUSpublicabouttherealcausesoftheeconomicslumpintheircountryandnotedthatcooperationwouldbemoreconstructiveasagainsttradewar.
IdontthinkthatgoingafterexchangeratepolicyisaproductivewaytosolveproblemsbetweenChinaandtheUnitedStates.Thereareproblemsbetweenthetwocountries,butexchangerateisthewrongissue,YashengHuang,professorofMITSloanSchoolofManagement,said.
Ithinkthemainproblem(fortheUSeconomicdifficulty)istheirresponsiblebehavioroftheWallStreetandtheexcessivederegulatorydriveinthefinancialservicesector,hesaid.
