Theobjectiveofthisstudyistoexaminetheeffectofownershipstructureandcompetitiononrisk-taking

behaviourofUAEbanksduringtheperiod1998–2010.Thestudycovers15nationalbanks,including

elevenconventionalbanksandfourarecbanks.Theproportionofownershipbygovernment,

privatesectorandinstitutionalownershipmeasuresownershipstructure.Concentrationisusedasa

measureofcompetition.Threecontrolvariablesarealsoincludedintheanalysiseconomiccondition,

banksizeandprofitability.ThemainfindingsofthisstudyarethatUAEconventionalbanksareriskier

thancbanks;concentrationofUAEconventionalnationalbanksisnegativelyassociatedwithbank

risk-taking,butthisinverserelationshipisnotconfirmedinthecaseofcbanks;andtheprivate

ownershipofUAEnationalbanksisnegativelyassociatedwithbankrisk-taking.Finally,theresults

indicatethatthereisasignificantdifferencweenUAEconventionalbanksandcbanks

regardingrisk-takingbehaviour.
