An important voice in?American literature, she wrote two novels and thirty-two short stories, as well as a number of reviews and commentaries. She was a?Southern writer?who often wrote in a?Southern Gothic?style and relied heavily on regional settings and?grotesque characters. Her writing also reflected her?Roman Catholic?faith and frequently examined questions of?morality?and ethics. Background of writing The story was first published in 1953 in the anthology?The Avon Book of Modern Writing. In 1960, it was collected in the anthology?The House of Fiction, published by?Charles Scribners Sons. A Good Man Is Hard to Find, because of its publication in many anthologies, became the most well known of OConnors works. A family, lead by a selfish and manipulative grandmother, head on a road trip from Las Vegas to Idaho. On they way they encounter a car accident and three men that will forever change their lives. Plot Relationship of the characters Summary Summary OConnor had ever said that religion is the main source of her writing. And she believed that” violence reveals divine grace ”. She wrote: Grace changes us and the change is painful. At the end of the story, the grandmother touched The Misfit, which cause to her own death. OConnor was trying to assert her belief —violence reveals divine grace by writing this end. The grandmother in the story accepted grace by acknowledging that she helped to create The Misfit and that they were bound by kinship Implication A Good Man Is Hard To Find is a deceptively easily read story which may make readers laugh and laugh, for OConnor captures a certain essence of southern life as few people have.
