Inthe1980s,socialandpoliticalcircumstancescontinuedtochange,andCanadiansocietyprogressedtowardsamoremulticulturalanddiverseculture.Withethedemiseofliterarynationalisminthe1980s,literarypracticesdiversified,andthereemergedapluralisticaestheticsbehindliteraryrepresentations.
Therearethreemajorcharacteristicsthatmaysummarizetheliteraryproductionsincethe1980s.First,Canadianliteraturecometotakeonapluralisticaspectinbothformandcontent.
Second,therehasbeenamarkedincreaseinthehistoricalconsequencesaswellaslegaciesofcolonialisminCanada,inahistoricalcontextinwhichCanadiansocietycametobeperceivedmoreandmoreasaninvader-settlersociety.
Third,inconnectionwiththegeneralinterestinthecolonialpast,thereemergedaprevalenttrendofnarratinghistoryinfictionalforms.
Beginninginthe1980s,manyofthewritersthathadestablishedreputationsinthepreviousdecadescontinuedtopublishmorebooksandthethematicscopeandsocialconcernhadwidenedinthenewpost-nationalistcontext..
Manypoetstookinterestinlyricalpoetryinaserialform.Astrongcurrentofhistoriographicalfictionthatcrossesthebordersbetweenhistory,story,andbiographywasclearlyidentifiableinthe1980s
Identity,belongingsandimaginationarethehauntingthemesformanyCanadian-bornethnicwriterswhohavetocometotermswithculturaldisplacementandrelocation.EcologicalconcernsgraduallybecameoneoftheprominenttopicsofCanadianliteraturesincethe1990s.
Novelistsalsocametoaddresstheproblemofenvironmentethics,animalsubject,andnaturewithstrongevidenceofarevoltagainsttraditionalanthropocentrism.LiteraryvoicesarebecomingmorepolyphonicasCanada’sculturaldiversitydeepens
