approachtolinguistics.Butalinguistsaljudgementsareoftenuncertain,ordisagreewith
thejudgementsofotherlinguists,atwhichpointrecourseisneededtomoreobjectivemethodsof
enquiry,usingnon-linguistsasinformants.
Thelatterprocedureisunavoidablewhenworkingonforeignlanguages,orchildspeech.

speakers(acommonsituationwhenlanguageshavenotbeendescribedbefore),twopeople
interacting,smallgroupsorlarge-scalesamples.Age,,socialbackgroundandotheraspectsof
identityareimportant,asthesefactorsareknowntoinfluencethekindoflanguageused.Thetopic
ofconversationandthecharacteristicsofthesocialsetting(e.g.thelevelofformality)arealso
highlyrelevant,asarethealqualitiesoftheinformants(e.g.theirfluencyandconsistency).
