Song of Myself Song of Myself is a poem by Walt Whitman that is included in his work Leaves of Grass. Walt Whitman was one of the most important American poets in the 19th century and one of the great innovators in American literature. He wanted his poetry to be for the common people. In the area of poetic form, Whitman made his great contributions. The poetic form he employed is now called free verse. The poetic form of “Song of Myself” is free verse --- the verse without a fixed beat or regular rhyme scheme. In this poem, he sings for self, common people, America, city life, nature, etc. Even Whitman used “I” in the whole poem, he does not consider the narrator to represent a single individual. Rather, he seems to be narrating for all kinds of people. “Grass” here stands for hope, because it can grow at different space, and it also stands for the development of human. Nature is broad and profound. As a human, however, we still need to trust ourselves. We should take a positive attitude for life, for whatever we meet or things that we will meet.
