Vienna and pencils: a question of passion.
Wienzeile in Vienna, September 25th 2010: it is Saturday morning, very early, and as on every Saturday, Hans Hromatka, a
Viennese-born entrepreneur, who has built up a successful business manufacturing plastic granules during the last 40 years, roams
through the largest flea market of the Austrian capital. He is a collector and he is looking for pencils, antique pencils.

“Sometimes, although not very often, I find a full, artistically designed box of unsharpened pencils, that probably survived a hundred
years in the cellar archives of a traditional local firm,” he enthuses. Most of the time, however, it is just a single leftover pencil, branded
with well known or long forgotten names that are a showcase for a 300 years old trade that has produced literally tens of thousands of
variations of a seemingly simple product.
150 years earlier, at the very same place, it was Carl Brevillier, another Viennese entrepreneur who strolled around what was at that time
a newly-built, chic boulevard at the booming heart of the imperial city. Vienna, like its two rival European capitals Paris and Berlin
