Gatheringevidencefromhundredsofparticipantsfromfivedifferentstudiesacrossthreecountriesoversevenyears,Langloisexaminedthefoodchoicesmadeafterbothreal-worldandvirtualexperiencesofnature.InthefirststudyconductedinFrance,participantstookatwenty-minutelongwalkthrougheitheralargegreenparkorthecity,takingphotosalongtheway.Afterwards,theycouldchoosewhattheywantedtoeatfromasnackbuffet.Thosewhowalkedinnatureatehealthiersnackscomparedtotheurbancitywalkers.
Butwasitthenatureorthephotothatdidthetrick?Theresearchersmovedonline,andtookonmoreparticipants.Onegroupwereshownaphotoofahotelroomwithawindowviewofanaturalsettingwhiletheothergrouphadawindowviewofanurbansetting.Athirdcontrolgrouphadnowindowview—theyhadclosedcurtains.Thoseexposedto“nature”inthiswaywerefoundtomakehealthierfoodchoicescomparedtoboththecontrolandurbangroups.“Byincludingacontrolconditioninourwork,thisresearchshowsthatitisnotexposuretourbanenvironmentsthatisdrivingunhealthyfoodchoices,butreallyexposuretonaturalenvironmentsthatisdrivinghealthierfoodchoices,”saidLanglois.
Withmostoftheworld’speopleexpectingtoliveinurbanisedareasby2050,thisresearchcouldprovideurbanplannersimportantinsightintothehealthimplicationsoftheirdesigns.Itisalsohopedthathighlightingbenefitsofnaturemaypromoteenv
