1Abstract
Sincetheauthors’lastreviewin2001[1],theuseofMultiphaseFlowMetering
(MFM)withintheoilandgasindustrycontinuestogrowapace,beingmorepopular
insomepartsoftheworldthanothers.Sincetheearly1990s,whenthefirst
commercialmetersstartedtoappear,therehavebeenmorethan1,600field
applicationsofMFMforfieldallocation,productionoptimisationandmobilewell
testing.Astheauthorspredicted,wetgasmeteringtechnologyhasimprovedtosuch
anextentthatitsusehasrapidlyincreasedworldwide.Awho’swho”oftheMFM
sectorisprovided,whichhighlightsthemergersinthesectorandgivesaninsightinto
themetersandmeasurementprinciplesavailabletoday.Costestimates,potential
benefitsandreliabilityinthefieldofthecurrentMFMtechnologiesarerevisitedand
broughtuptodate.Severalmeasurementstechnologieshaveresurfaced,suchas
passiveacousticenergypatterns,infraredwavelengths,NuclearMagneticResonance
(NMR)andElectricalCapacitanceTomography(ECT),andtheyarebecoming
commercial.Theconceptof“virtualmetering”,integratedwithclassicalMFM”,is
nowwidelyaccepted.However,sometimestheprinciplesoftheMFMmeasurements
themselvesareforgotten,submergedinthesalesandmarketinghype.
