Ifleftuntreated,agroupofbeeswilltypicallydiefromthemiteswithintwoyears.Theseinfections,plusfarmchemicalsandpoornutrition,haveforcedbeekeeperstostruggletokeeptheirbeesalive.Ofthe2.6millionhoneybeegroupsintheUS,overhalfofthemhaveparasiticmite.
Andthat’sonlythecountofthosebeesthataretestedandreported;theactualnumbersarelikelymuchhigher.Beekeepershavestillmanagedtoslowlyincreasethenumberofgroupstheykeep,onaverage,butatamuchhighercost.
