CIRCUITDESCRIPTION
TheECMcomparesthetwowaveformsoftheheatedoxygensensorslocatedbeforeandafterthecatalyst
todeterminewhetherornotthecatalystperformancehasdeteriorated.
Air–fuelratiofeedbackcompensationkeepsthewaveformoftheheatedoxygensensorinfrontofthecata-
lystalternatesbetweenbackandforth,fromrichtolean.
Ifthecatalystisfunctioningnormally,thewaveformoftheheatedoxygensensorbehindthecatalystswitches
backandforthbetweenrichandleanmuchmoreslowlythanthewaveformoftheheatedoxygensensor
infrontofthecatalyst.
Whenbothwaveformschangeatasimilarrate,itindicatesthatthecatalystperformancehasdeteriorated.
MONITORDESCRIPTION
Thevehicleisequippedwiththetwooxygensensors(O2S).Oneismountedupstreamfromthethree–way
catalytic(TWC)converter(frontheatedoxygensensor”sensor1”),thesecondismounteddownstream
(heatedoxygensensor”sensor2”).Thecatalystefficiencymonitorcomparesthesensor1and2signals
inordertocalculateTWCabilitytostoreoxygen.
Duringnormaloperation,theTWCstoresandreleasesoxygenasneeded.Thisresultsinlowoxygenvaria-
tionsinthepostTWCexhauststreamasshown.
