We need to find out what the customer knows about the risk the hazard poses… Not every dust, mist or gas presents the same risk… it all depends on a number of factors which include: Concentration… how much is in the air? Exposure time… how long are the workers exposed to it? Toxicity… how bad it is for you? Individual sensitivity and health… are some workers going to be affected more than others? Breathing rate etc… this depends on the job being done and physical exertion… are they sitting, standing or moving about a lot etc So where do we start? * * There are a number of ways airborne contamination levels can be measured… A single measurement can be taken near to the breathing zone of the worker Or the worker can be provided with a dosimeter which is worn during a shift… constantly monitoring levels throughout the shift There are different types of sampling devices and detectors depending on the type of hazard e.g detectors for gases and vapours and samplers for particles The results will be either measured in mg/m3, ppm or fibres/cm3 …depending on the substance and how it needs to be measured * * “Luckily, our body counts on some natural protection to help us against most common dirt and dust that always is present in air.” “The hair we have in our nose helps to filter the large dust particles in air.” “Inside our pharynx and trachea there are also cilia, shaped similarly to eyelashes, but much smaller, that help expel other particles that get passed the nose hairs.
