thosepreyanimalshaveinthewildareprovided,thepreypopulationdropstolowlevelsbutnotto
extinction.Lowpreypopulationlevelsthenprovideinadequatefoodforthepredators,causingthe
predatorpopulationtodecrease.Whenthisoccurs,thepreypopulationcanrebound.Inthissituationthe
predatorandpreypopulationsmaycontinueinthiscyclicalpatternforsometime.
Populationcyclesarecharacteristicofsmallmammals,andtheysometimesappeartobebrought
aboutbypredators.EcologistsstudyingharepopulationshavefoundthattheNorthAmericansnowshoe
harefollowsaroughlyten-yearcycle.Itsnumbersfalltenfoldtothirtyinatypicalcycle,andahundredfold
changecanoccur.Twofactorsappeartobegeneratingthecycle:foodplantsandpredators.
