ABSTRACT
Agoodgraspoflexicalcohesionbytheinterpreterhelpsinunderstandingthe
sourcelanguagediscourseandthespeakerspurpose,leadingtotheconstructionofa
coherenttargetlanguageinterpretation.Thisthesisattemptstoprovideacomprehensive
descriptionoftheshiftsoflexicalcohesioninconsecutiveinterpreting.Anditwill
examinethepotentialreasonsbehindtheshiftsobservedinthematerials.
Inordertofigureoutthetypes,distribution,andpotentialreasonsforshiftsof
lexicalcohesioninChinese-to-Englishconsecutiveinterpreting,theauthorconductsan
experimentinvolving15traineeinterpreters.Theparticipantsareaskedtointerpreta
Chinesespeechofapproximatelyfiveandahalfminutes,andtheirinterpretingproducts
areusedastheresearchmaterials.Theauthorcomparesthesourcelanguageandthe
targetlanguagetoidentifylexicalcohesionshiftsoccurringintheprocessof
consecutiveinterpreting.Thentheauthorsummarizesandclassifiestheselexical
cohesionshifts,calculatingthefrequencyandpercentageofoccurrenceforeachtype
ofshift.Subsequently,theauthorconductssemi-structuredinterviewswiththe15
traineeinterpreterstocarefullyanalysethereasonsforlexicalcohesionshiftandthe
proportionaldistributionofeachtypeofreason,whichareclearlypresentedthrough
tablesandfigures.Finally,theauthorbasedonGricescooperativeprinciplewhich
consistsoffourmaximsofcommunication,revealssomelexicalcohesionshiftscan
improvetheeffectivenessofinterpersonalcommunicationinconsecutiveinterpreting.
