According to UNESCO, the gardens of Suzhou “represent the development of Chinese landscape garden design over more than two thousand years”. Among these gardens, the?Humble Administrator’s Garden?is the largest and most renowned. Along with the Summer Palace in Beijing, the Chengde Mountain Resort in Hebei and the Lingering Garden in Suzhou, it is considered as one of China’s four most famous gardens. The Humble Administrator’s Garden was originally laid out in 1509. It was initially a private garden of a former government official in Ming Dynasty named Wang Xianchen. He rebuilt it when returning home because of his failure in official life. It symbolized his desire to retire from political career and adopt a hermit’s life. Wen Zhengming, one of the Four Talent Painters in the Ming Dynasty, was invited as the designer of the garden. And he spent more than 16 years creating the garden.
