HELPING others is a big part of the Christian religion. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Christian organizations like the Salvation Army, set up in 1865, mixed church with charity. Gradually volunteering became a big part of everyday life. You can see that in the fashion for charity shops in Britain, where people give away their old clothes to resell, the money made going to various good causes. Volunteering is particularly big among young people, and is seen as a way of developing character. In fact, when you are applying to university, the UK University and College Admissions Service will give you extra points on your application form for volunteering.; (2008天津卷C篇) I love?charity?shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every?high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you won’t find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for?unwanted?goods.
