Completely different approaches are required for each ML level. This categorization illustrates the degree to which multilateral technology is completion driven. While the Level 1 and Level 5 wells may have similar drilling requirements, the completion requirements for the two may have very little in common. The definition of each level is as follows. Level 1 - Open unsupported junction. The mainbore trunk and lateral trunk are barefoot or have a slotted liner hung off in either bore. Level 2 - Mainbore trunk is cased and cemented with the lateral either barefoot or with slotted liner dropped off in open hole. Level 3 - Mainbore trunk is cased and cemented with the lateral cased but NOT cemented at the junction. Level 4 - Mainbore trunk and lateral are both cased and cemented. Both bores are cemented at the junction. Level 5 - Pressure integrity junction. Straddle packers or integral mechanical casing seal. Cement alone is NOT an acceptable means of obtaining long term hydraulic integrity. Level 6 - Pressure integrity junction achieved with casing. (Again, Cement alone is NOT acceptable) Level 6S - Downhole Splitter with large main bore and 2 (smaller) lateral bores. Completely different approaches are required for each ML level.
