Monocrystalline
Silicon Growth
Monocrystalline Silicon Growth
• Market Drivers
• Equipment Status
• Productivity Improvements
Market Drivers
• Cell Efficiency
– Mono cells produce 6% to 10% more power than multi cells in real
world applications
– Advantage multiplies with the high cost of installed module systems
– Higher efficiencies obtainable by some manufacturers with
specialized cell techniques
• Polysilicon
– Supply/Demand to remain out of balance and prices to remain high
– Higher value mono cells more suitable for costly virgin poly
• Slicing
– Mono ingots produce higher yields with ultra thin slicing
Demand for CZ pullers will continue to grow at a high rate
despite throughput and raw material quality advantages of multi
Market Drivers
• Cell Size
– New capacity predominantly in 150 mm p-sq cells vs 125 mm
– Need for CZ pullers sized for productive growth of ~210 mm
diameter crystals
• 22” – 24” crucibles
• 120 kg – 150 kg charges
– Lack of standards Some crystals ~175 mm diameter
– Shift to larger sizes likely to occur slowly (175 mm to 200 mm p-sq
cells) will require pullers for ~230 mm to ~300 mm diameter
crystals.
CZ solar growers increasing in size and charge capacity
Flexibility for growing various diameters desirable
Equipment Status
• New pullers already developed for range of
crystal sizes/lengths in demand
• Modifications made for longer ingot lengths
(2 m) and emphasis on cost/value for PV
• Two zone heating
– Maximize charge size for given furnace
– Reliable melting; less crucible damage
– Lower ox
