Master Cheng Yen was born in Chingshui, a small town in central Taiwan in 1937. Her uncle was childless, so she was given to 1 by her aunt and uncle. When she was 12, her father died suddenly from a stroke. It was when searching for a burial place for him
2 Cheng Yen first came into contact with the Buddhist Dharma. At age 20, she left home to wander from one temple to another, pondering on the questions such as 3 . In 1963, she became a 4 of her mentor, the late Venerable Master Yin Shun, and was given the dharma name of Cheng Yen. She then settled in Hualien, led a simple and virtuous life, and worked with poor and sick people. 5 by the work experience there, Cheng Yen was determined to set up a modest charity foundation.
In 1966, Cheng Yen established the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, commonly known as Tzu Chi, 6 motto is instructing the rich and saving the poor. Since then, Tzu Chi members have been committed to disaster relief, bone marrow donation, environmental protection, and community volunteering. For example, whenever a disaster happens 7 at home 7 abroad, Tzu Chi members mobilize to offer help to the disaster area 8 . Also in Tzu Chi, there is a large group of seniors 9 recycling and environmental protection duties.
