Text Reading: p. 26 Donne’s sonnet “Death Be Not Proud” * A 结构美 起 3 quatrain 承 转 1 couplet 合 So...... So...... The 1st quatrain This quatrain is very complimentary to the young mans beauty and shows Shakespeares deep admiration and love for the young man. The 2nd quatrain In this quatrain, the speaker states that the sun in summer is either too hot or overcast by clouds, but the youth is still temperate and his beauty will never be overcast. The 3rd quatrain The 3rd quatrain of the sonnet shows that the youth is different from the summer. His beauty will last for ever and never die. Shakespeare continues to explain his promise to the youth and he is going to save the youth from the fate of fading away. The couplet In the couplet, the speaker uses a parallel structure to state that as long as human lives, his poetry will survive, and, in turn, the youths beauty will live on forever in the poem. Sonnte 18 Theme: The message is that in this world no beauty (in Nature) can stay except poetry or art; and your beauty can only last if I write it down in my poetry. 韵律美 rhyme scheme: abab cdcd efef gg iambic pentameter 爱友的美 喻体---- a summers day (1st 2nd quatrains) 本体---- more lovely and more temperate(3rd quatrain) 总结----- 排比(the couplet) 主题和内容美 humanism: 爱征服一切,美常驻人间。 It emphasizes the dignity of man, affirms and eulogizes the value of man It advocates the full espression of individualism and the fulfillment of ones ability, against the despotic rule of feudalism. It affirms the delight of earthly achievement, as well as mans desire for happiness and pleasure. 修辞语言美 rhetorical devices simile and rhetoric question metonymy and personification pun, hyperbole and synecdoche Features of Shakespeares Dramatic Works Shakespeare described the decaying of the feudal society and the rising of the bourgeois spirit.
