Reverence for Human Life and Death 棗Film Review Of揟he Green Mile? Abstract: Death Row, known here the Green Mile, is the last step leading to death. Besides, in “The Green Mile”, the story of magic happening in the most unlikely place, Death Row of the Cold Mountain Penitentiary in Louisiana,1935,it embodies humanity, a redemption from sin as well as reverence for human life and death. Key words: reverence human life death Summary of the film: Based on the novel by Stephen King, it is the story of magic happening in the most unlikely place, Death Row of the Cold Mountain Penitentiary in Louisiana, 1935. The film is told in flashbacks about the memories of Paul Edgecombe as an old man. As the head guard on Death Row, known here the Green Mile, Paul is earnest and humane. Facing death, the prisoners here are peaceful, hoping for redemption for their crimes, such as the well-adjusted “Del”, who develops a keen friendship with a mouse called “Mr. Jingles”. John Coffey, a mild black giant, who is afraid of blackness and sentimental, appears on the death row, convicted of a horrendous crime of killing two little girls. Cured of his urinary infection by Coffey, Paul finds his Christ-like abilities and supernatural healing powers. Later, Coffey brings Mr. Jingles, who is killed by Percy, the sadistic prison officer, back to life;and cures the warden’s wife, Linda, of her swelling. Coffey also passes a sickness he absorbed from Linda to Percy, then Percy empties his pistol and kills the devil inmate “Wild Bill”, who has humiliated him, while Percy himself has to pass his rest life in a mental-health institution. Though Coffey is proved innocent by showing Paul that it is Wild Bill who is the evil behind Coffey’s crime, he chooses the execution to end his life.
