On applying schema theory in teaching English reading in junior high schools I. Introduction English reading teaching plays a very important role in improving the quality of junior high school’s English teaching. Developing reading comprehension ability is considered as the chief task in English Teaching Syllabus. Therefore, how to train the students to improve their reading ability is thought to be the focus on the whole foreign language teaching. And there are many theories made to give ways of English reading teaching. Among all the theories schema theory plays the most important role in teaching English reading. This thesis will do some further research on applying schema theory in teaching English reading in junior high schools. 1.1 Research Motives At this level of my research, I decide to select the following issues as my research motives and objectives: National English Curriculums proposes the teaching objective is to improve students’ comprehensive language skills, while Chinas traditional English reading teaching puts the grammar and vocabulary as the most important parts, and it despises language ability of applications. However, junior high school students are younger, and they lack relevant background knowledge accumulation. Many teachers take teaching English reading equal to the teaching of words and grammars. This has made the students feel dull in reading English text, and some students feel that reading is very difficult because they can not understand the text very well. After reading some educational books and papers about the traits of English reading and many research theories that focus on the English reading comprehension teaching, I found that the schema theory has proved to have the most important function in improving the students’ English reading capability.
