* Step 5 is “Know how influenza presents”. Step 6 is “Manage fever well”. Step 7 is “Practise healthy lifestyle”, and the last step, Step 8, is “Be resourceful”. * We’ve also got to develop good personal hygiene practices. For example, we should wash hands frequently. If we develop respiratory tract infection, we should wear a mask. When coughing, we should cover our mouth and nose with tissue. Used tissue should be disposed of in a covered rubbish bin. We should also remember to avoid touching our eyes, mouth and nose. * To prepare for exigencies, we also need to prepare masks for several weeks’ use and antipyretics for use of about a week. You should remind your parents to store medicines in a safe place, and take note of the storage instruction and expiry date. There should always be a thermometer, liquid soap and tissue at home, as well as the information of family doctors and other useful information. Such information includes the most update information on influenza and the phone number of the nearest hospital, etc. * Step 2 is to “Get vaccinated”. There are cases of seasonal influenza throughout the year in Hong Kong. Do you remember the when peak seasons of influenza are? In Hong Kong, seasonal influenza usually has peaks in the periods from January to March, and from July to August every year. Getting vaccinated is an effective means of preventing influenza and its complications. This is especially important for individuals that are vulnerable to influenza and its complications. In view of this, the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases has recommended that several groups of people must get vaccinated against influenza. As for us, we can consult our family doctor about whether we need to receive the vaccination. * So who should receive influenza vaccination? For the year 2005-2006, the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases recommends the following groups of people in Hong Kong to get their flu shots: Elderly persons living in
