Unit 3 Academic Lecture 1. A starting point for all astronomy students should be the great star “Venus”. 2. Of course, we know it is not a star at all but the second planet from the Sun and the sixth largest. 3. Venus is usually visible with the unaided eye. Sometimes referred to as the “morning star” or the “evening star”, it is the brightest star in the sky. 4. It is the brightest object in the sky except for the Sun and the Moon. 5. Venus probably once had large amounts of water like Earth, but it all boiled away so now it’s quite dry. 6. Earth would have suffered the same fate had it been just a little closer to the Sun. 7. Much of the surface of Venus is covered by lava flows and there are several large volcanoes. 8. Findings also indicate that there are still some active volcanoes on the Venus, but only in a few spots. 9. For the most part, it has been geologically rather quiet for the past few hundred million years. 10. Well enough about the introduction of Venus, tomorrow I’d like to tell you how to locate it. 11. I want to talk today about some studies that seem to indicate that there has been a startling world-wide decline in the number of amphibians such as frogs. 12. There is little doubt that one reason why the number of amphibians is declining is their habitats are being destroyed. When developers fill ponds and marshes to build houses, amphibians can’t just move somewhere else.
