Introduction
Grammarisanessentialcomponentoflanguagelearning,andeffectivegrammarteachingisimportantforstudentslanguageproficiency.Therearemanyteachingmethodsforteachinggrammar,andoneofthetraditionalmethodsistheGrammarTranslationMethod(GTM).TheGTMemphasizesthetranslationofvocabularyandgrammarrulesfromthetargetlanguagetothenativelanguage,anditseffectivenesshasbeendebatedamonglanguageeducators.Inrecentyears,therehasbeenagrowinginterestinimplementingtheGTMinteachingEnglishgrammarinsecondaryschoolsinChina.ThisstudyaimstoinvestigatethecurrentpracticeandstrategiesoftheGTMinteachingEnglishgrammarintheseschools.
LiteratureReview
TheGTMhasbeenwidelyusedinlanguageteachingformanyyears,butithasbeencriticizedforitsdrawbacks.TheGTMisoftenseenasoutdatedandineffectiveinlanguageacquisition,asitfocusesmoreonlearninggrammarrulesandvocabularythanonpromotingcommunicativecompetence.However,somescholarsarguethattheGTMcanbeeffectiveincertaincontexts,suchaslearningliterarytextsorpreparingforstandardizedtests.TheGTMcanalsohelpstudentsimprovetheirreadingandwritingskills.
ResearchMethodology
Thisstudywilluseamixed-methodsapproachtoinvestigatethecurrentpracticeandstrategiesoftheGTMinteachingEnglishgrammarinsecondaryschoolsinChina.Theresearchwillbeconductedinthreephases:(1)asurveyquestionnairetocollectdataoncurrentGTMpracticesinEnglishgrammarteaching,(2)classroomobservationstoidentifyspecificteachingstrategiesusedintheGTM,and(3)interviewswithteachersandstudentstogainabetterunderstandingoftheirperceptionsoftheGTM.
