Thesefrictionscantakemanyformsandmayhavemanysources, includingworkerand rmheterogeneity,imperfectinformation,andcosts oftransportation. Howaremarketoutcomesin uencedbysuchfrictions? Thatis,howshouldweexpectpricestoformand–giventhatmarketswill notclearatallpointsintime–howarequantitiesdetermined? Dothese frictionsmotivategovernmentintervention? Thesequestionsareperhaps particularlypertinentinthelabormarketwherecostlyandtime-consuming transactionsarepervasiveandwherethequantitydeterminationmayresult inunemployment:someworkerswillnotndjobopeningsortheirapplica- tionswillbeturneddowninfavorofotherworkers. Thisyear’sPrizeisawardedforfundamentalcontributionstosearch andmatchingtheory.Thistheoryoffersaframeworkforstudyingfrictions inreal-worldtransactionsandhasledtonewinsightsintotheworkings ofmarkets. Thedevelopmentofequilibriummodelsfeaturingsearchand matchingstartedintheearly1970sandhassubsequentlydevelopedintoa verylargeliterature. ThePrizeisgrantedforthecloselyrelatedcontribu- tionsmadebyPeterDiamond,DaleMortensen,andChristopherPissarides.
