词汇辨析（二） difference, distinction, discrepancy, discrimination这些名词都有“差别，区别”之意。 difference :普通用词，可指事物本质上的差异或数量上的差额，也可指事物在某一方面的差别，还可指人们之间的不同意见。 When the synthetic fabric is contrasted with the natural one, the difference is very apparent.（要是把合成纺织品和天然纺织品对比一下, 它们的差别就很明显了。） distinction :较正式用词，除指事物在本质上的差别外，还指在某一方面或某一细节上的区分，要在认真观察、研究后才易觉察。 I cant see any distinction between these two cases.（我看不出这两个案例有什么不同。） discrepancy :多用于言论和记述方面，指两物之间缺乏使之相似或平衡的协调。 The discrepancy in their ages seemed not to matter.（他们之间年龄的差异似乎没有多大关系。） discrimination : 侧重指在判断、见识方面的差别，也可指待遇上的区别。 Strict discrimination is exercised for the admission of members.（对于同意入会的会员实行严格区分。） development, evolution 这两个名词都表示“发展”或“进化”之意。 development :强调通过一系列自然过程或人工方法使某物潜在或隐藏的可能性显露出来，得以实现。 The tribes development was more primitive than that of their neighbours(那个部落处于比邻近部落更原始的发展阶段。) evolution : 侧重指事物由简到繁，由低级到高级的连续发展，强调变化或演变。 In the course of evolution, some birds have lost the power of flight.(在进化的过程中, 一些鸟丧失了飞行能力。 devise, conceive, formulate这些动词的均含“设计、设想”之意。 devise :侧重设计的临时性和权宜性，并隐含有更多的设想可用。 He has devised a scheme for making money.(他想出一个赚钱的办法。) conceive : 强调在制定计划之前的先有设想构思。 I conceived that there must be some difficulties.(我料想到一定有些困难。) formulate与conceive相反，指在devise之后的具体设计活动。 He formulated a plan of attack.(他制定了进攻计划。) destroy, exterminate, extinguish 这3个动词均有“消灭”之意。 destroy :指通过杀戮或终止某人某物的机能，使之无用或毁灭。 It seems hes destroying himself.（他似乎正在毁灭自己。） exterminate : 指大量地、成批地杀害、消灭。 Some people exterminate garden insects by spraying poison on the plants。（有些人在植物上喷撒毒剂以杀死花园内的昆虫。） extinguish :原义指灭火，转义后暗示生命、希望等像火一样地消灭、熄灭。 His discovery extinguished the achievements of his colleague.（他的发现使他同事的成就黯然失色。） 分词 分词起形容词和副词的作用，在句中做定语或状语。在概念上应清楚： 现在分词表示主动，表示动作在进行。 过去分词表示被动，表示动作结束了的状态或结果。 1.分词做定语，弄清现在分词与过去分词的区别。分词短语做定语相当于省略了的定语从句，考生应掌握： (1)现在分词与被修饰词之间具有主动意义。如： It’s easy to blame the decline of conversation on the pace of modern life and on the vague changes taking place in our ever-increasing world.(相当于the changes which take place...)
