Course code:Course name: Molecular Biology
Lecture Hours: 48
Laboratory Hours: 0
Credits: 3
Term(If necessary): any
Prerequisite(s):
a Biochemistry, Genetics, English;b Cell Biology, Microbiology;c Organic Chemistry, Structural Chemistry
Course Description:
The objective of this course is to help the life science students with knowing of the molecular metabolisms, the structural architectures and the functions of macromolecules, such as proteins, and nucleic acids in living cells, with a particular emphasis on the DNA molecules as genetic information carrier. Further, students will also be taught with the techniques used in modern biological research and the methodologies of experimental design, questioning, reasoning, manipulations and drawing appropriate conclusions etc. So that students will be prepared for working with both theoretical and technical questions in the future.
Course Outcomes:
After completing this course, a student should be able to:
Develop the abilities in getting to realize the systems of molecular biological knowledge, experiments, and related engineering techniques
Analyze questions relating to molecular biological knowledge and techniques
Design molecular biology experiments, such as gene cloning, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis
Use molecular biology to help getting healthy life
Course Content:
The main topics of the course are categorized into three modules: Self-maintenance of Gene; the decoding of Genetic information; and applied molecular biology, including molecular medicine, molecular agriculture etc. which will be delivered as the following:
1. Cells and macromolecules 1hr.
Cell classification
Subcellular organelles
Biological macromolecules
Assembly of macromolecules
2. Protein structure 1hr.
