Upgrading Solutions for Existing Slab Caster Segments

1. Abstract:
Optimized design of the caster segments is a decisive factor to achieve ideal slab support, slab quality and high
caster productivity and still to reach low maintenance costs. Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH (Siemens
VAI)), as a leading supplier of continuous casting technology and service provider in this field introduced a new
roller type known as the SIMETAL EcoStar roll to especially fit existing caster segments with a minimum need to
modifications. Featuring the use of modular and proven design elements in combination with special manufacturing
techniques, a superior roller solution has been developed that offers a number of significant benefits for steel
producers. Subject paper outlines the main design features of this new caster roller type, solution variants, and aspects
of maintenance and refurbishing. Examples of industrial applications are presented.
2. Introduction:
Strand guide segments are permanently exposed to harshest conditions such as vapors, acids and heat and they
are expected to withstand enormous forces with a minimum of deformation. Under such conditions, their rollers are
normally subject to wear, leakage and even breakage. To stay competitive roller design and additionally cooling water
provisions need to be analyzed regarding extension of service life-time at reduced failure rates of the system. By
