CAD and CAM have been playing an important role in industrial design, involved in all fields, including industry, construction, health care and so on. CAD/CAM is also playing an increasing important role. CAD design technology has been applied in prosthodontics and greatly developed. This paper conductes a study of the common CAD technologies for prosthodontics, and pointes out their strengths and weaknesses.The main problem is that it takes great cost to establish a standard teeth database, needing to collect large amounts of datas. Based on this, we need to analyze the datas and to establish the standard teeth database. It will takes a lot of work. In order to construct the restorations without a standard teeth database, we propose a solution using curve interpolation to establish the surface of the crown. According to the critical control points of the standard tooth and the shape of standard crown, we use third curve interpolation to establish the surface of the crown. Hermite curve requires very little computing and torage. Compared to second interpolated curve, Hermite curve is more flexible when used to simulate irregulars. In order to facilitate the realization, we use Cardinal curve, an improved format of Hermite curve, in our actual operation. We use image edge extraction based on Canny operator to extract contours of restoration bottom and waist. Canny operator is widely used and the curve extracted by Canny operator is clear and single. Gaussian smoothing is also used in our oral image processing. We extract these edges perfectly, and provide a guarantee for the accuracy of restoration. We extracte the curves perfectly from the 3D image acquired by CT through Canny operator and construct the restoration through our algorithm. Our algorithm is proved to be feasible.
