Abstract
Duetoitswidedisseminationandconvenientproductionmethods,
documentarieshavebecomeanimportantmediumforstoringanddisseminating
informationintoday’ssociety.Althoughdocumentarysubtitletranslationbelongsto
audiovisualtranslation,italsohasitsownpeculiarityandcomplexity,whichpays
moreattentiontoinformationexchangeandculturaldissemination.Therefore,
studyingsubtitletranslationpurelyfromalinguisticperspectivehasobvious
limitations.Previousstudieshavemainlyviewedsubtitletranslationasaprocessof
mutualconversionbetweensourcelanguageandtargetlanguage,whileneglecting
otherfactorsintheprocessofinformationtransmissionandregardingthedynamic
processofinformationtransmissionasastaticclosedtwo-levelsystem.However,
fromtheperspectiveofcommunicationstudies,translation,asacross-cultural
communicationactivity,hasaholisticanddynamicnatureaseachelementinthe
processisinterrelatedandinterdependent.Thestudyofdocumentarysubtitle
translationfromtheperspectiveofcommunicationstudiescanprovideabroaderand
moreeffectiveperspectiveforsubtitletranslationpracticeandresearch.
AsadocumentaryabouttraditionalChinesemedicineculture,TheTaleof
ChineseMedicinetakes“Chineseherbalmedicine”asawindowtodisseminate
traditionalknowledgeandshowcasethedepthofChineseculture.Thisreporttakes
thepracticeofChinese-EnglishsubtitletranslationforTheTaleofChineseMedicine
asacasestudy.Itanalyzespotentialobstaclesinthetranslationprocessfromthe
perspectiveofcommunicationstudies,usingLasswell’s5Wtheoryasaframework,
andproposescorrespondingtranslationstrategiesandmethods.The5Wtheoryinfers
tothebasicprocessandfiveessentialelementsofcommunicationstudies,namely
“Who”,“SayWhat”,“InWhichChannel”,“ToWhom”,and“WithWhatEffect
