Research on Rockmass Stability Based on Failure Approach Index

Abstract:Onthe basisof the YAI(yield approach index) and PLI( plastic load index) ,the new concept, FAI ,is introduced. It is the
sum of danger coefficient CRI (thephasecomplementary parameter of YAI ) which describes the damagedegreeof rockmassinthee
lastic zone and PLI which describes the damage degree of rock mass inthe plastic zone. This concept is introduced in the three di
mensional nonlinear finite element method and it is used to analyze the stability of largescaleunderground caverns of a hydropower
station. The results show that this concept can describe the criticality of rockmass. So this concept is very important in the assess
ment of stability, the election of excavating and supporting schemes.
