Either / Neither (of) 以及谓语动词的单复数之争 本文首发于解放军外语学院《教学研究》1989年第4期 不少国内外英语辞书的作者再三告诫读者说：either (of) 和neither (of) 这两个词语均表示单数概念，因此当它们作主语时，其谓语动词必须采取单数形式。兹就我国读者较熟悉的著作中引证如下： 1. C. E. Eckersley J. M. Eckersley所著的A Comprehensive English Grammar(p.125) 认为，either和neither两者都是单数。 2. 葛传槼在《英语惯用法词典》(p.214，p.396)中说，either和neither属于singular number。把它们当做plural是英美人常有的错误。 3. 张道真的《实用英语语法》（第二次修订本）(p.424)指出，either，neither通常作单数看待。而只字未提及复数用法。 4. 国内中学界发行量颇大的，北京海淀区教师进修学校主编的《高中英语第一册辅导与练习（下）》(p.84，p.98)一书中，在谈及不定代词either及neither用法时着重强调，either (of)与neither (of)作主语时，谓语动词一定要用单数形式。 5. 以日本田中饶所著《英语文法，作文百问百答》(p.80)表明，和either的情况相同，neither指“既不是这个，又不是那个”，是单数，所以谓语动词也要用单数。 有些试题集或习题集之类书籍则将上述词语与复数谓语动词搭配的情况判为错句，引证如下： 6. T. E. Berry所著The Most Common Mistakes in English Usage (p.40) 一书中写道，当either与neither作代词用时，总是单数的。 Wrong：Either of the boys are acceptable to do the errands. (Wrong because the verb should be singular to agree with the subject“either”) Right：Either of the boys is acceptable to do the errands. Wrong：Neither of the courses are acceptable in meeting this requirement for graduation. Right：Neither of the course is acceptable in meeting this requirement for graduation. Wrong：I liked the tenor and the soprano, but neither were really top flight. Right：I liked the tenor and the soprano, but neither was really top flight. 7. P. J. Sharpe的TOEFL(New York, Barron’s Educational Series, Inc. , 1977)一书中安排了这么一对正误句辨识： W：Either of these buses go past the university. R：Either of these buses goes past the university. 上列书籍及例证均阐明一个观点，即在either (of)和neither (of)这两个词语作主语的情况下，谓语动词只能使用单数形式。 必须承认，“either (of)和neither (of)这两个词语作主语的情况下，谓语动词用单数形式”的结论本身无可指摘。但问题在于，确系非此莫属吗？事实的回答是，不见得。这里牵涉到英语的主谓关系的一致性问题。 英语的主谓关系在数别方面的一致性的确是个令人棘手的问题。历来语法界颇有争议。总的说来，数的一致性并存着3条相互交错（有时看来甚至相互矛盾的）原则。 1）语法一致原则（principle of grammatical concord）：即主、谓语的数别一致关系纯粹根据主语的语法标记而定。语法形式是单数的主语（如girl），谓语动词用单数形式（如sings）；语法形式是复数的主语（如girls），谓语动词用复数形式（如sing）。例如： The girl sings well. The girls sing well. 2）概念一致原则（principle of notional concord）：即主、谓语的数别一致关系不是根据主语的外部语法标记，而是根据主语内在涵
